The “2016 Korea Sale FESTA,” the nation’s largest tourism and shopping festival, began on Thursday.
Designed to boost the depressed domestic consumption, the festival will run through October 31st, offering not just shopping opportunities but also concerts and exhibitions. Bargain sale events will be held for eleven days until October ninth, while tourism programs for foreign visitors and regional cultural festivals will continue through October 31st.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said that 217 companies will participate in the festival, up from 125 in last year’s Korea Black Friday sale.
Shopping opportunities are the highlights of the Korea Sale FESTA this year. For example, Hyundai Motor will offer discounts of five to ten percent on five-thousand Sonata, Grandeur and Santa Fe cars during the festival. Samsung Electronics will offer discounts of up to 53 percent on home appliances in 12 categories.
Department stores will add to the festive mood by offering unprecedented free gifts to attract customers. Lotte Department Store will hand out a gift worth one-point-one billion won to a sole winner. Other department stores like Shinsegae and Hyundai will stage aggressive marketing efforts, such as discounts of up to 70 percent.
To mark the launch of the Korea Sale FESTA, a K-pop concert will be held at Yeongdong Boulevard in southern Seoul at 6 p.m. on Friday.
At the COEX convention center, six hands-on programs on the hallyu Korean cultural wave will be operated. Visitors will also be invited to an augmented reality game that was modeled after “Pokemon GO.”
