SEOUL, June 3 (Yonhap) — South Korea and Indonesia held ministerial talks here Friday on promoting tourism between the countries, officials said.

“The two sides agreed to expand people-to-people exchanges on the civilian level,” Kim Jong-deok, South Korea’s minister of culture, sports and tourism, said as he met Indonesian Tourism Minister Arief Yahya at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul.

Their meeting was a follow-up to summit talks between President Park Geun-hye and her Indonesian counterpart Joko Widodo in Seoul last month.

Indonesia is one of South Korea’s major tourism partners. More than 376,000 South Koreans visited Indonesia in 2015, while nearly 200,000 Indonesians came here.

The South Korean government expects the combined number to reach one million within the next five years.

The number of Indonesian travelers here jumped 13.5 percent over the past five years.

Indonesia, which has a population of 250 million, is emerging as an important nation for South Korea’s tourism industry, the ministry said.

It is pushing for the expansion of halal restaurants and prayer facilities for Indonesian tourists.
