South Korea’s defense exports have been sharply increasing.
The Financial Times of Britain reported on Tuesday the country’s defense exports have soared from 73 million U.S. dollars seven years ago to 871 million U.S. dollars last year — an increase of eleven-hundred percent.
The article cites one analyst who projects defense exports will surpass one-point-two billion dollars this year.
Geopolitical uncertainty is seen as driving the demand for defense acquisitions, ranging from disputes in the South China Sea to Russia’s annexation of Crimea.
The Times says South Korean defense companies offer an edge in price competitiveness and present attractive conditions to importers such as technology transfer.
