The government will strengthen research and development(R&D) efforts regarding infectious diseases to prevent another outbreak like that of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome or MERS.
The Health and Welfare Ministry said Tuesday that state-level strategies on related response measures were finalized during the 12th meeting of the National Science and Technology Council earlier in the day.
The strategies include boosting the correlation between R&D and the state quarantine system and also expanding international coordination on new or mutated infectious diseases.
The Seoul government will first step up R&D support in blocking the spread of disease, preventing its inflow into South Korea, providing an appropriate initial field response and creating an environment better suitable for treatment.
The government will also aid in the development of technologies that can provide enhanced assistance on quarantine sites.
It has also laid out ten key areas requiring sufficient investment over the next five years.
